Mochi Mahjong

How to play

Mochi Mahjong is mahjong solitaire with a small twist: instead of picking two tiles at once, the tiles you tap wait in a tray below the board. It takes a minute to learn and stays relaxing for a long time.

The rules

  • Free tiles

    You can only tap a free tile: no tile lies on top of it, and at least its left or its right side is open. Tiles that are not free look a little dimmer.

  • The tray

    Each tile you tap hops into the tray, which has four slots. As soon as two identical tiles are in the tray, they vanish as a pair.

  • Clearing a level

    Remove every tile to clear the level. There is no clock: a faster clear only adds a small time bonus to your score.

  • When the tray is full

    If the tray fills up without a pair, the level is lost. Once per level you can put the tray tiles back for free; after that it costs dried fish (up to three times a day), or you can start a fresh deal. Mochi never scolds you.

Hint, Shuffle and Undo

  • Hint

    Shows you a pair you can take right now.

  • Shuffle

    Mixes the remaining tiles when you are stuck.

  • Undo

    Puts the last tile you tapped back on the board.

You start with a few tools. Clearing levels 3, 6, 10 and 20 for the first time gives you more, from level 10 there is a small gift every day, and you can trade dried fish for more or share the game with a friend once a day.

Special tiles

  • Blanket tiles

    Some tiles are tucked under a blanket. Tap a free one to lift the blanket and see what is underneath.

  • Bell tiles

    Bell tiles ring themselves away as soon as both of them are free – ding! – and bring you extra dried fish.

  • Yarn tangles

    A tangle of yarn locks a tile. Clear the number of pairs shown on the yarn and it comes loose.

  • Lucky paw

    The lucky paw pairs with any tile. Save it for the tile you need most.

Stars, dried fish and the daily challenge

Every cleared level gives up to three stars (fewer hints and shuffles, more stars) and some dried fish. Stars decorate Mochi's rooms; dried fish feed Mochi and buy toys and outfits. The daily challenge is a new board every day, the same for everyone that day.
